[nylug-talk] [Fwd: [IP] CopyRight Office asks about IE]

Maybe we can craft a single, party line response to mail in... Has anyone
seen a response yet that we can use? A few points I consider important
that could be made:

1) IE doesn't support web standards and MS has already declared IE 7 won't
either
2) IE only runs on Windows PCs and is not standard on Apple's Mac.
3) Linux and Mac desktops are increasing market share (37% growth YoY for
Linux desktops? ..can't remember latest #)
4) IE has already been the subject of anti-trust regulation
5) Today there are viable alternatives such as Mozilla's Firefox, Apple's
Safari, and Opera which all support published, agreed upon standards that
Microsoft participates equally in setting.
6) Large enterprises and homes users are switching away from Microsoft IE.
IBM for instance makes Firefox available for its 330,000 employees. 1 out
of 10 people use Firefox, a greater ratio use standards based browsers.
7) Security issues with spyware, activex exploitation, rootkits, and other
IE targeted security exploitations may compromise the security and privacy
required by the copyright office.
8) Without an alternative browser option, there will be a single point of
failure with IE. Security exploits or security patches could compromise or
disrupt the copyright submission process.

Mail in your response. I know lawyers (am one myself) and they are
generally incompetent technically (save a very few) and probably don't
understand the implications of this. Lawyers understand a jury and public
opinion so flood them with responses. I doubt there will be many responses

supporting this so it would be nice to flood them with valid reasons this
is not a good idea. Get the word out and actually mail in a response. Mine

will be in the mail tonight.

Your government producing its primary product yet again: Incompetence
and counter-productive initiatives.

If this goes through, only the browser which was the subject of an
anti-trust conviction will be able to be used to pre-register
copyrights.
